The drama continues…

One of the blog’s readers, Eric, recently sent us an article discussing Saturday’s BBA events he posted on a BBA thread but it was removed … here’s what he had to say:

At the risk of being shot down, sworn at and abused by the die hard Richard fans who believe that no matter what their boy does he can do no wrong I will post this thread.

In the same way that some forumists have the right to say what they want and go to the extent of blaming Ricki, alcohol and whatever they will next concoct as an excuse I have the right to post this thread and be heard.

Throw all the insults you like – I will not be silenced.

It’s this simple

If BB truly believed that nothing untoward happened on Saturday then why were the HM offered to see a psychiatrist? The HM only apologized for over indulgence and nothing more. Since when does someone need to see a psychiatrist after excessive drinking.

BB is rated 16NL and in their statement they mention this and that parental control can and should be used. What transpired on Saturday Afternoon was most definitely not 16NL but rather 18SNL and one can almost add violence to that depending on your viewpoint. The producers could see what was happening however they continued to show the live footage. This is an indication that they were more interested in their ratings and gaining further viewers as well as votes in the final weeks of the show. The producers only chose to remove the cameras from the bedroom and focus on an empty garden once all events had transpired and the paramedics were brought in.

Richard has full recollection of what happened on Saturday because on Tuesday he threatened to finger Tatiana and Ofunneka during an argument. Someone would not make a statement like this out of the blue in an argument without making reference to a previous event.

More proof that Richard remembers is that he has full recollection of events as they transpired before and shortly after the event. He even recalls the paramedics entering the room and asking the one paramedic to kiss him on the cheek. Richard was also drunk as he also passed out in the diary room however due to the fact that he does remember in detail what transpired one has to conclude that he was in control of his actions.

If Ofunneka does remember what happened, then she is not bringing it out in the open yet. One must remember that they are isolated in the house and have no idea what the viewers see or think. It would be a big risk at this late stage of the game, and in the final race to win $100 000, to say anything as this could jeopardise her chances of winning especially knowing that Richard has survived so many evictions. This would also destroy Tatiana with whom she is friends. Bringing it out in the open would be going against both Richard and Tatiana.

The question now has to be asked that if she does indeed remember does that make her consenting. The answer is simple. Would she have done or allowed this selfish act to be done had she not been intoxicated especially with Tatiana lying on the bed next to Richard and herself. NO. Therefore she was not consenting.

Alcohol is sometimes used as an excuse for unacceptable behavior. When a man sexually assaults an acquaintance, he is seen as less responsible for his actions if he was drunk. Our societal double standard, however, results in the woman being seen as “to blame” for the assault if she was intoxicated. In addition, victims who were drinking when they were sexually assaulted tend to have more feelings of self-blame. It is important to remember that no one deserves to be sexually assaulted. Choosing to drink alcohol should not be equated with choosing to be sexually assaulted.

According to law, a person who is unconscious (passed out), or incapacitated, whether from alcohol, drugs, or illness, cannot give consent to sex. Therefore, if sexual contact occurs, it is sexual assault. When there is any uncertainty about your partner’s ability to give consent, it is wise to wait for another time. To engage in sexual activity with someone who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs simply is against the law.

Debbie Harrison, director of KZN R ape Crisis, was aghast when she heard of the programme’s content. She is quoted as saying “If Bezuidenhout penetrated Malokwu with his fingers, as is alleged, then according to the new clauses contained in the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, it is an act of r ape, rather than sexual assault. The Bill says that if the woman is unable to consent to a sexual act, it constitutes ra pe”

  1. See how pathetic Africa is about a Reality show, That is what it is , a show. Africa does not deserve another Reality Show Mnet , just keep in here in South Africa we do act childish.

  2. This, to me, doesn’t look like a person who is camoutose, unconscious or whatever people want to call it. She was consenting, bwana – maybe yes, under the influence of alcohol – but richard was just as drunk too.

One thing though, he should cut out the “I will finger you” threat. He can be so childish at times.

  3. I totally agree with this write up.

  4. I mean i agree with the fact that if Richard didnt know wat he was doing he wldnt be threatening anybody like that.
His supporters are just been unneccesarily blind to his foolish act.
He did wat he wanted to do or wat he felt like doing.he was in control of all he was doing…if that wasnt wat he felt like doin, why was he still saying he wld finger the gals.

  5. Richard clearly knew what he was doing and it’s sad that Big Brother didn’t intervene as they should have probably done. I would call it something similar to ‘date rape’. Ofunneka must have had some idea of what happened that day but even in her right sober senses, i totally agree that she would never let Rich do that to her in bed while she was beside him. Yes, Ofu might have wanted it but since when did it become a sin for a grown-ass woman to be horny (especially after 83 days of no sex)?

  6. This was the post on the first post daily magazine yesterday.

“The sight of a blind-drunk young woman being assaulted by a Big Brother housemate in what may be the most public rape ever has turned the stomachs of millions of television viewers.

The incident, broadcast live by a pay-TV conglomerate across Africa, has prompted denunciations from the continent’s great and good. Viewers have flooded newspapers and internet message boards with emails expressing undiluted outrage.

Many of the emails contain photo clips from the programme that appear to show Richard Bezuidenhout (left), a 24-year-old film student from Tanzania, assaulting Ofunneka Molokwu, a 29-year-old medical assistant from Nigeria.

M-Net, which airs the show to a million-plus subscribers in South Africa, disputes the audience’s version of events in the Big Brother house in Johannesburg, saying that if a “non-consensual physical relationship” began there, the producers – Endemol SA – would have intervened. “There is no indication that she was unconscious at the time,” said Joseph Hundah, an executive at M-Net.

However, viewers of the incident, which took place on Saturday afternoon after an extended drinking bout which ended in copious vomiting and apparent blackout for Molokwu, remain adamant about what they saw: Bezuidenhout lay down next to the comatose young woman and penetrated her vagina with his fingers. He carried on despite the pleas of another female housemate for him stop. Under the law in South Africa – where, on average, a woman is sexually assaulted every 40 seconds – such an act constitutes rape.

Bezuidenhout, who is married, finally desisted and went off to sit by himself while drunkenly sniffing his fingers. At this point the producers of the show did intervene, sending paramedics into the house and cutting the live feed.

Bezuindehout, defending his sexual behaviour in a show that has featured copious nudity, recently told his housemates, “Well, this is Africa.”

The contest is due to reach a climax on November 11. But the $100,000 on offer to the winner may prove chump change compared to the settlement sought by Ofunneka (right) and her lawyers once she escapes the Big Brother bubble and views footage of her very public humiliation.”

  7. Eric, I agree with you 100 percent. Richard should take responsibility for his actions. As far as I am concerned he should be kicked off the show. I also blame the producers, who seemed set on turning the hm into alcoholics. They must have known Richard was drunk, they even locked him up in the diaryroom. The whole incident was disgusting and demeaning to the two women. I hope further action is indeed taken against Richard.
It is rewarding to see that there is such outrage at what happened. Keep up the good reporting Eric.

  8. Nuff respect Roba171! Your case is well stated! Shouldn’t these complaints go to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa?

  9. If this goes to trial it would be an interesting rape case. Rape is a notoriously difficult to prove charge.

What makes this case different is that the entire event was captured on tape. Everyone can argue back and forth about whether it was rape or not, but at the end of the day this case will be decided by what is on the tape.

    For example:
    1. If the tape shows that Ofunneka continued to finger herself after the incident, lawyers for MNET will use it to suggest that she wanted the fingering to happen.

    2. If it is true that Richard tried to pull away from Ofunneka and she tried to pull him back to her, if it is true that Richard had to struggle to get away MNET’s lawyers will argue that Ofunneka wanted the sexual content.

At the end of the day this is pretty much an open and shut case. The events are on video. If the tape shows Richard forcing himself on Ofunneka, Richard could face charges. If the tape shows Ofunneka pushing herself on Richard, there will be no charges.

If MNET is wise, they will be consulting their lawyers right now. If MNET is wise they should show the tape of what happened to the housemates, and ask them again if they want to see a psychologist. If they wait for Ofunneka to exit the house before she sees what happened, she will probably decide to sue.

My issue with MNET is not the fact that they provided the alchohol, or the fact that they didn’t intervene in time, or even the fact that they showed the incident. My problem is with the way MNET is trying to sweep the issue under the rug and run away from the issue. They issued a statement and asked the housemates if they wanted to see a psychologist, and as far as they are concerned, the issue has been resolved.

  10. As i always state wen i give my reasons 4 Africa not rewarding Richard, lets c reason 4wat it is,not bse we are ardent supporters.Funny tho that richard’s popularity poll may increase fm this so absurd situation.U wud wonder what Africa’s values r.Richard’s continued survival at evictions,am sure gives him a certain status in da hse.Dat his deeds r so appreciated by da public.Hence calling 4more silly action. Now,if he gets away with this,i rest ma case

  11. I tend to be iffy on the write up. In some forms I agree but some of his views I could not differ more.

  12. People, listen to yourselves – so a girl is allowed to horny, grope a guy, grind hereself to the guy even, but the guy is not supposed to touch her? And if he does, it’s “date rape” as Janissa puts it? People please! I agree that Richard can be very annoying and childish, but what happened on Saturday took two!
Dave, thanks for outting lights into things, because many seem to have agreed that things are certain and that is it!

  13. Ofu is a great, intelligent and warm woman! Rich has a big heart yet can be a child – our BBA man-child. Tati is just special. 🙂

People are so blinded by their love for Ofu so much that what she does is right irrespective, and whatever is done to her even if she was involved, the blame shifts to the other person. People are so clouded by their admiration for Ofu – but she’s only human and has needs like anybody else. Whether it was the alcohol that brought her guard down and we saw the uninhibited Ofu, it still doesn’t change the person that she is – a great, caring, loving, person! If being horny and craving for some action makes one evil, then we are all guilty of that sin.

Who should the money goes to – I really don’t mind – I have enjoyed all three alot and I think they are all lovely!

I just wish people would stop pointing fingers at what happened on Saturday. Both Ofu and Richard remember everything. Ofunekka being the type of woman who respects herself greatly is clearly embarrassed by what she had done – under the influence of alcohol and infront of the whole of Africa – and chooses not to talk about it. And of course if she admits remembering, clearly it will jeopardise her friendship with Tati. Who would?

Richard being the man-child that he is would love to talk about it. He lost his mom at a young age, married very young – life has just been rushing him. Richard is a child – we shouldn’t forget – he would still love to explore the world.

Anyway, we are lucky that the others boys have been evicted – because believe me, we would have heard alot! right now, he doesn’t have anoybody to talk to about what had transpired that day – much as he would love to let it out.

What gets me though is the way everybody is crucifying Richard for a-t-t-a-cking Ofunnake, some even cry r-a-p-e! How? When? While Ofunneka was groping Richard and grinding herself happily into him. If it’s anything, I’m sorry, but she was r-a-p-i-n-g him – unfortunately you can’t r-a-p-e the willing, can you? Lets call a spade a spade, people.

By the way, if the same had happened to either Meryl, Lerato or Bertha – I promise you Africa would have been singing a different song, “they wanted it,” and Richard would have been the King of the jungle! Such double standards!

    My two cents. 🙂

  14. As the saying goes, “In for the penny in for then pound”. BB is about what “we” will do for money/fame. Everyone in then house deserves what they get, $100,000 or a finger!

  15. This is stupid. 3/4s of the people shouting rape have not even seen a clip. As long as there is no footage available just keep this to the side and wait for more info.

  16. […] 03:31 PM Home The drama continues… Big Brother Africa II : The Ultimate Fan Weblog The pictures are on there ^ looks a bit consensual… also a few ”other” photos on there so be […]

  17. Big Brother Africa, Endemol, SA broadcasting, Human rights, journalists – this sexual assault and rape issue is serious. I hope some serious action is taken. I have been watching BBII since the beginning and this has left a sour taste in my mouth. You have to seriously take into account that no action will lead to future perpetrators feeling they can get away with such actions.

  18. i thing the clips shld be rolled all over again.the best way Mnet can lay this to rest it to lets have a luk at wat really happened cos a whole lot of people based their judgement on hearsay.tho i like richy but he isnt my no 1 fan due to the fact the he’s so so childish and with his wifey’s stuff i kind of see im as an opportunist, tho i think 90% of guys out there are as well.but i wldnt want to base my judgment as regards ofu’s issue on better we see the clips be4 we know wat to say.

If Mnet is so sure of themselves and if they feel it is really consensual then let them go ahead and show thethe scene all over cos a lot of viewers that watched are of the opinion the the girl was really out,she didnt know wat was happening ,if she knew y was she tryng to questioning richard to tell her a bit of wat happened wn on sunday richard mentioned that ofunnemama kissed im,it didnt go down well with tati and offunneka and it was said that she retreated to the toilet to cry.feel she might have guessed wat happened by now but she wont want to believe something like that happened to her.

  19. I enjoy spamming this blog because I’m a big ol’ cunt! 🙂

  20. If people insist on screaming sexual assault, it surprises me that there is ambiguity about who assaulted whom. Offuneka abused Richard into getting what she desperately wanted. Richard pulled away and Offu forced and groped him. The two HMs were both drunk, probably equally. Just because Offu is not talking about the incident does not mean she does not remember, else she would have asked BB why he thinks she needs a Psychiatrist.

Both HMs were under the influence. Offu forced Rich into an act of fingering. This was something she was already doing herself and she forced Rich to help. Really now, if Rich wanted to sexually assault anyone, ahe would have gone for Tatiana who was lying there for the taking. Enough of the bias against men already. Women can and have been widely known to sexually assault men too. I don’t think there was any sexual assault. If people think there was, then Richard was abused by Offuneka.

  21. Ofu enjoyed every moment what Richard did. She opened her legs so that Richard can finger her better after that she grapped him and kiss him while she know who she kissing. Richard must pussed her away. She know what happened that day. Oh my Lord, Richard, he bring out the true colours of her

  22. Richard supporters who defended him for what he are F#CKING A$$HOLES!

  23. the video is on youtube for anyone and everyone to see and no matter how much she may have seemed like she wanted it, performing a sexual act on a woman while shes under the influence of drugs or alchohol is an act of rape and if she gets a coupleof good lawyers, she can totally take Richard and MNET to the cleaners.
